Instagram Automation Not Sending DMs: 9 Causes and Fixes
Instagram automation not sending DMs? The 9 most common causes (connection, keyword, 7-day window, one reply per comment, pauses, limits) and how to fix each one.
When an Instagram automation doesn’t send the DM, the cause is almost always one of nine things: the connection expired, the Instagram message-access setting is off, the keyword didn’t match, the comment was too old, the comment already got a private reply, another automation answered first, the automation or subscription is paused, Meta is throttling, or the person can’t receive the message. Check them in this order; most cases are solved in the first three steps.
The order below goes from the most common and fastest to check to the rarest. Menu names change by app version and country, so treat the paths as a guide.
The 9 causes and how to fix each
1. The Instagram connection expired
Tokens expire or get revoked (password change, removing the app from your account). Symptom: nothing sends anywhere. Fix: reconnect the account in your tool and test again.
2. Message access is off in Instagram
Instagram has a setting that lets connected tools access your messages (in the messages settings of your professional account). If it is off, replies can fail. Fix: enable it, then run a test.
3. The keyword didn’t match
Keywords are usually case-insensitive, but the match type matters: “contains” is forgiving, “exact” is not. A comment of “I want the guide!” won’t match an exact keyword “guide”. Accents, emojis and extra words also matter. Fix: test with the exact word first, then loosen the match type if you want.
4. The comment is too old, or came before the connection
Private replies work only within 7 days of the comment, and comments made before the account was connected aren’t answered. Fix: test with a fresh comment on the post. Old comments won’t receive a DM. See the 24-hour window and the 7-day rule.
5. The comment already received a private reply
Instagram allows one private reply per comment. If another automation (or an earlier send) already answered it, the second one is refused. Fix: make sure only one automation targets that trigger on that post.
6. Another automation answered first
When two automations can match the same comment, the more specific one wins and the other stays quiet. Tools usually warn about keyword conflicts. Fix: give each automation a distinct keyword, or a distinct post.
7. The automation (or the account plan) is paused
A paused automation, a deleted one or an inactive subscription sends nothing. Fix: check that the automation is active and the plan is in good standing.
8. Meta is throttling sends
On busy days Meta can temporarily limit sending. A good tool queues and retries, so the DM arrives late rather than never. Fix: wait and check the activity log. See Instagram DM limits.
9. The person can’t receive it
The person may have blocked the account, restricted messaging, or the conversation can’t be opened. This is permanent for that recipient. Fix: nothing on your side; the tool stops retrying.
Quick diagnosis table
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Nothing sends for anyone | 1, 2 or 7 |
| Works for some comments, not others | 3, 4, 5 or 6 |
| Arrives late during a viral post | 8 |
| One specific person never receives | 9 |
| Public reply goes out but no DM | 2, 5 or 9 |
Where to look in Breeze
Breeze records why a DM did not go out, such as an expired window, a paused automation, a refused send or a comment that was answered by a more specific automation. Check the activity and errors area first, then the automation settings. For a clean first setup, see how to automate Instagram comments step by step.
A 5-minute test routine
- Post or open a recent post with the automation active.
- Comment the exact keyword from a different account.
- Watch the public reply and the DM. If the public reply works but the DM doesn’t, start at cause 2.
- Check the activity log for the reason.
- Fix one thing at a time and retest.
Breeze
Breeze is a paid Instagram automation platform with a 3-day trial. It uses the official API and logs why a message didn’t go out.
FAQ
Why is my Instagram automation not sending DMs? The most common causes are an expired connection, message access turned off in Instagram, a keyword that doesn’t match, or a comment older than 7 days.
Why does the public reply work but the DM doesn’t? Often message access is off, the comment already received a private reply, or the person can’t receive messages. Check the activity log for the reason.
Can I send a DM to an old comment? No. Instagram’s private reply works only within 7 days of the comment.
Why did a different automation answer my comment? When two automations match, the more specific one answers and the other stays quiet. Use distinct keywords to avoid conflicts.
Does a delayed DM mean something is broken? Not necessarily. On busy days Meta can throttle sends and a tool that queues will deliver later.
